Die Bibliothek als öffentlicher Ort und Raum
Do we need libraries as public places when hybrid, virtual libraries or the digital library pro-vide open access to everyone in the world? Is the library still important as a public place in modern society? Places of encounter, general public meeting places are increasingly disappearing in our society and with them existing social connections are in danger of collapse. It is precisely here that the library can be a public space which serves as a meeting place for everyone. Many countries have countered the disappearance of public spaces with new and modern library buildings, with new concepts and strategies for their libraries as places for the community. In this book international librarians examine libraries as public spaces: as centers of urban meeting (Eigenbrodt, Germany) and as meeting places for a living municipality (Dewe, Great Britain; Pfoser, Austria). The library can be a partner in periods of crisis (Hibay, USA). The library must be aware of the barriers which it has erected and they must be removed if it wants to be really accessible for everyone (Ulrich, Germany). It must also be visible outside of the library location at places where people gather (Wilson, Therani, USA). Marylaine Block (USA) lists different strategies and new business models to network the library with its tasks and locations The library as a public space is a political concept. It offers people a public area which is increasing being lost to them. The library should thus unfold as a binding force which other institutions no longer radiate and it should do this in addition to merely supplying information. The library has an important role for the community. Decision makers as well professional should be convinced of this important role. The political conditions have to be changed to permit libraries not only to provide information but to be open as public places. For librarians, information teachers, students, information manager and all information professionals.
