Do we need libraries as public places when hybrid, virtual libraries or the digital library pro-vide open access to everyone in the world? Is the library still important as a public place in modern society? Places of encounter, general public meeting places are increasingly disappearing in our society and with them existing social connections are in danger of collapse. It is precisely here that the library can be a public space which serves as a meeting place for everyone.
