Behind this title a dramatic story is hidden: A new medium causes economical and political turmoils and threatens to become increasingly a target of mercy of the different interests of power. The introduction of the internet in South Africa was pursued with great enthusiasm of single individuals in the academia. Cut off from the networking of the international academic environment, from international conferences and symposia, the internet offered a possibility to open the door to the international world, and to participate at the resources of knowledge world wide.

It is precisely here that the library can be a public space which serves as a meeting place for everyone.
